How to make a funscript

A funscript is motion data timed to a video. In FunGen you can generate a starting script, author one point by point, or combine both methods before saving a standard .funscript file.

1. Open the video you are scripting

Drop the video onto FunGen. The video, audio and timeline now use the same playback clock, so every action you create has an exact timestamp. If a matching funscript already sits beside the video, FunGen loads it automatically; start a new timeline if you want a separate version.

2. Choose how to create the first pass

Generate from the picture

Open Transform > Generate, or use the Generate card in the right rail. Pick a tracker that matches the video type, review its options, and run it on the whole video or a selected section. Read the detailed video-generation guide for supported 2D and VR workflows.

Build it manually

Choose File > New timeline for an empty Stroke lane. Move the playhead through the video and place action points at the positions you want. You can drag a point to change its time or position, and use frame-step controls when a cut or motion change needs exact placement.

Follow the soundtrack

For music-led edits, FunGen Pro Audio can create motion from the soundtrack instead of the picture. That is useful when beats and edit structure matter more than visible movement. The resulting points remain ordinary funscript actions that you can change on the timeline.

3. Refine the motion on the timeline

Play and pause with Space, step a frame with the arrow keys, and select only the span you want to change. Move individual points or use transforms for operations such as timing, amplitude and smoothing. Every edit can be undone; a generated pass is a starting point, not a locked result.

For multi-axis hardware, add or edit the required lanes and keep their motion aligned against the Stroke lane. The funscript editor guide explains the timeline, chapters, transforms and multi-axis workflow in more detail.

4. Review before using hardware

Watch the script against the video and inspect fast changes, long gaps and sections where the points do not match what you intended. FunGen desktop includes the Doctor quality checks, and the on-screen simulator can preview T-Code motion without connecting a physical rig.

5. Save the file

Choose File > Save funscript, or press Cmd+S on macOS and Ctrl+S on Windows or Linux. FunGen writes the standard JSON-based .funscript format. Keeping the funscript beside the matching video lets FunGen load the pair automatically the next time you open that video.

Next: play it

The file is independent of any one device. Continue with how to play a funscript, or check the supported device and connection options.
